- Congress designated the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area in 1984 to protect the geologic, ecologic, cultural, and scenic values of the Mono Basin. Tufa towers and migratory birds are among the area's attractions. Explore the Scenic Area on your own or with a ranger / naturalist on a guided walk or tour. A visitor center overlooking Mono Lake is located just north of the town of Lee Vining.
