Description:

  • The short hike up to the "pillboxes", or Lanikai bunkers, on Ka'iwa Ridge offers a bird's eye view of the Mokulua Islands and a sweeping view of the windward coast. The first section of the hike is steep and can be slippery due to the dusty soil. Unfortunately, there is nothing to hold onto other than grass and a few shrubs, so wear hiking shoes. There is no shade on the hike until you reach the pillboxes. The two pillboxes were built by the military during World War II. From the summit, you can see all the way to Chinaman's Hat. The trailhead is located opposite Mid Pacific Country Club on Kaelepulu Drive in Lanikai in a residential area so be respectful of the residents. - Shiyana Thenabadu
