Ulupo Heiau State Historical Monument

Description:

  • The Ulupo Heiau (Night of Inspiration) is a sacred Native Hawaiian temple located in Kawainui Marsh. Ulupo is one of the first temples to be built as an agricultural heiau and it is the second largest existing temple on O'ahu. The area surrounding the temple used to include ancient fishponds and taro fields. A short walk behind the Windward YMCA will take you to a 30 foot-high rock platform, which is the remnant of the temple. Tourists interested in visiting a cultural and historical site will enjoy a visit to Ulupo. Visitors are asked to be respectful while at this sacred site. The entrance to the heiau is on Manu Oo Street. - Shiyana Thenabadu
