Step into Buddha's belly for a measly 20 yen

  • Description:

    • The Daibutsu ("Big Buddha," the second-largest Buddha statue in Japan) lives in Kamakura, about an hour's trip from Shibuya by local trains. Stately and imposing, the Daibutsu is a favorite weekend pilgrimage among camera-toting Tokyoites, and the crowds testify to this fact. Don't miss this most-important monument, and the opportunity to enter his belly for a measly 20 yen. The surrounding area of Kamakura – an ancient capital nestled in a natural setting and filled to the brim with shrines, temples, and other ancient treasures – makes an ideal day trip from Tokyo. Admission to the temple is 200 yen.
