Description:

  • A short drive north of Kennebunkport is a little local marvel: a scrap yard masquerading as a museum (the "world's oldest and largest museum of its type"). Quirky and engaging, the museum was founded in 1939 to preserve a disappearing way of life, and today the collection boasts more than 200 trolleys, including specimens from Glasgow, Moscow, San Francisco, and Rome. Naturally, there's also a streetcar named Desire from New Orleans. About 40 of the cars still operate, and the admission charge includes rides on a 2-mile track. Other cars, some of which still contain early-20th-century advertising, are on display outdoors and in vast storage sheds.
