Guided kayak excursions are available throughout the Keys, designed for paddlers of all skill levels. Kayak rentals are available for those who want to venture into the backcountry waters on their own.

With their pristine conditions, abundant wildlife and numerous launch sites, the Keys can be a paradise for kayakers. Even a strong wind, the kayakers' worst enemy, doesn't have to scuttle a day of paddling in the island chain.

In the Lower Florida Keys, that life can include a dog's-eye exploration of the Keys' azure waters by kayak, while the humans do all the paddling. Lazy Dog Island Outfitters, MM 4.2 oceanside at Hurricane Hole Marina,  offering Doggie Paddle guided kayak excursions for people and their pooches in addition to regularly scheduled tours.

Seasoned Keys dog trainer Raul Hernandez and dog-loving kayak guide Colby Gwyn-Williams lead the two-hour excursions. Paddlers travel through the mangrove shallows to a sandbar where two-footed and four-footed friends can frolic together in the warm saltwater.

Kayakers without dogs can borrow one of Lazy Dog's tail-wagging goodwill ambassadors for the paddle. Trips are scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturdays and 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Cost is $15 per person, and dogs ride free.

Lazy Dog Island Outfitters also offers a variety of other kayak, fishing, dolphin-watch and snorkeling excursions.
