Rwanda allows visitors to visit 7 of its famous gorilla families. Trekkers meet for a briefing at the headquarters and then head up into the volcanoes to find one of the families. Most are back to their hotels by 1pm. Given that tourists have the opportunity to sit within 7 meters of the rare mountain gorillas that made Dian Fossey famous for an hour – and given the price ($500 per permit, $80 for the car, hotel, food…) – this is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
