- Located 10 miles (14km) south-west of Kilkenny city, Callan is a small town of only 1,300 people, but an area with a rich historical legacy. First founded in 844AD by the high-king of Ireland, Niall Caille, the area was occupied by the Normans in the 12th century, and later became a principal holding of the Ormond-Butlers, who reigned during the 1400s. For those interested in the turbulent history of Kilkenny, Callan is certainly worth a visit. The village's Town Hallplayed a major role in the struggle for land-reform, while its Workhouseis a sombre reminder of the ravages of the Great Famine. Ample accommodation can be found in the area's numerous B&Bs, while an 18 hole golf clubis located 1km south of the area.
