Knysna Forests

Description:

  • These last pockets of indigenous forest are some distance from town: Goudveld State Forest is 30km (19 miles) northwest of Knysna, while Diepwalle is some 20km (12 miles) northeast. Goudveld is a mixture of plantation and indigenous forest, making Diepwalle, with its ancient yellowwoods, the better option for the purist. Look out for the emerald Knysna Loerie and the brightly hued Narina Trogon in the branches. Diepwalle has three excellent circular trails color-coded with red, black, and white elephant markers. The routes are all 7 to 9km (4 1/4-5 1/2 miles) long, and the red route is recommended because it features the most water.
