It seems you have been around a bit. To put it plainly: Phuket is for tourists, Khrabi and the deep south is for travellers. Please keep one thing in mind: June is monsoon time, and the west coast of south Thailand is more affected (rough winds, choppy sea, dangerous to swim and snorkle, red flags everywhere=meaning danger!)
Depending on your pasttimes, be it swimming, snorkeling, diving, the east coast might offer you a better choice - Samui, Ko Tao etc.
In addition to that, the middle and eastern portion of the deep south is insurgent area (Pattani, Patthalung, Yala), so be a little attentious and listen to what your government recommends you in terms of warnings.

What are your priorities, favorites, skills etc? Once there, it is easy to make YOUR
choice. At least go to Koh Lanta .....! Have fun.

There are some really beautiful places to visit in and around Krabi. Railey which although part of main land is split by the huge limstone cliffs and accessible only by boat has a fantastic beach, this and neighbouring Tonsai is a great place to try rock climbing. There are many different levels from beginner to experienced.
Au Nang is also a great area to visit. A bit more lively than Railey but with nice long beaches to enjoy as well.
In Krabi itself you have a variety of different things to do and see. The night Market is good for shopping, picking up some cheaper items, trying some local foods.
Cheak out the Tiger Temple (wat tan sua) and see the natural caves in the jungle. Take a good lot of water as well as there is long long flight of steps to contend with first.
Visting Klong Thom for a dip in hot springs and then check out the emerald pool at Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve.
There is also elephant treking availible but you can easily book all of these things as a package tour and enjoy a day of fun in and around krabi.

Hi Eppy
As a person who has lived on Phuket for four years, I have just had the most wonderful holidays in the deep south, yea, the so called no-go areas.
WOW, the folks are wonderfully friendly, the prices for everything from food, the accommodation, massages, taxis, tourist visit sites etc, great.
I hate to say it, Phuket is now priced itself way out of the normal happy tourist market and into the market of sex and cheap deaths.
Sorry for being so direct, but I don't have any problem advising tourists of the REAL pitfalls of little Island called Phuket.
Now, when were you last here?
