• The area around Kitano shrine in the north west of the city is dotted with tofu producers and tofu restaurants. Toyokechaya dates from 1897 (look out for the original hand-painted glass door) and it sells tofu directly and creates delicious tofu-based meals in its traditional restaurant. The restaurant is in an old building that sets the mood for the traditional Japanese food it serves. The tofu set meal, which is served on a large tray with rice and pickles, is outstanding. Not only is it healthy and filling, but it is also delicious.
