Gio-ji Temple

Gio-ji Temple - Kyoto

  • Description:

    • The Tale of Heike tells us that two of Kiyomari Taira's [1118-1181] mistresses, both dancers of the Heian period, took refuge here and became nuns after their affairs with Kiyomori were broken off. The first lady, Gio, came with both her mother and sister. A short while later Hotoke Gozen joined them to live in the rather remote rustic cottage with its thatched roof. Students of classical Japanese literature visit the nunnery to see the statues of Gio's mother, Gio, her sister Ginyo, Hotoke Gozen, and the pivotal player, Kiyomori.
