Honnoji Temple

Description:

  • This city-center Nichiren temple dates from 1415, but like most Kyoto temples it was destroyed by fire. The existing structure you see was rebuilt in 1587. The temple is famous for its connection with the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who committed suicide near here after betrayal by one of his generals, Mitsuhide Akechi. A monument to Nobunaga stands in the grounds. Admission: Free
