User Review:
- A hike in Kyoto's northern mountains is a great way to escape the summer heat. Take the Keifuku train from Demachiangi, the northern terminus of the Keihan train line, to Kibune. Get off the train at Kibune station and walk north for about 20 minutes passing high end ryokans on the right hand side as you stroll up a gentle winding road into the middle of Kibune. The hiking path over to the neighboring valley of Kurama is not well marked but you can always ask along the way to make sure you don't get lost. The hike takes about 90 minutes. When you come down into Kurama Dera (temple), you will eventually descend through a long flight of stairs to the street. If you feel like having a hot onsen bath, you can walk north (turn left when you come out onto the main street) for about 15 minutes walking along yet another winding road until you get to Kurama onsen. The outdoor bath or 'rotemburo' here is wonderful and is very reasonably priced at ¥1,100 yen. All this hiking and bathing will easily take up half your day. Enjoy!
