New Year Festival at Yasaka Jinja

Description:

  • From early on the first morning of the New Year, literally millions of people visit Yasaka Shrine in Gion to pray for good health for the coming year and to queue to take a light home to kindle the stove for the first meal of the day. The crush of the crowds is quite awe-inspiring and probably best viewed from afar—unless you like crowds of course. The railroads usually run free trains throughout the night to shunt the masses to the shrines in Kyoto. Millions of yen are collected in donations from the faithful or the superstitious, however you wish to see it.
