Otsukimi (Evening of Moon-Viewing)

Description:

  • Otsukimi, or "moon-viewing" has been celebrated in Japan for since the beginning of the 10th century. After the long summer heat, the autumn sky is clear and the full moon is a magnificent sight, especially in the right surroundings. You can celebrate this festival at home, searching for the elusive rabbit on the moon making rice cakes. However, it might be a good idea to visit Daikaku-ji Temple where you'll be served tea and small, moon-shaped sweet dumplings. There is also a "full-moon" prayer ritual in which flowers are offered to the deity of the shrine. Since the festival depends on good weather and a full moon, the date varies each year, but is usually held in August or September.
