Sekizan Zenin

Description:

  • This most beautiful hillside temple is an eclectic mix of both Buddhist and Shinto elements and can easily be fitted in with a visit to the nearby Shugakuin Palace. A Tendai sect temple was established in 868 by disciples of Ennin, who spent many years as a student in China, Sekisan Zen-in offers a serene walk through beautifully tended woodland, a teeming carp pond and maple trees ablaze with color in the fall. It is a hidden gem and there is no admission fee.
