Description:
- Ishikawa Jozan, an Edo period scholar and poet with an interest in the Chinese classics, founded this temple as a mountain refuge in 1631 after falling from grace with the Tokugawa shogunate. Now a Zen temple of the Soto sect, the walls of Ishikawa's former study are lined with portraits of Chinese poets by the renowned Kano School of painters. The dry sand garden is rounded by azaleas, maples and camellias. The peaceful garden is also famed for its shishi-odoshi, a piece of bamboo that is filled with water and when full, clacks on its stone bowl to scare away wild animals.
