Moraine Lake Lodge

• Understated and lovely, the Moraine Lake Lodge has the feeling of being apart from the world in the wilderness -- even though it's only a 3-minute drive from the Chateau Lake Louise. This is what Banff National Park luxury is meant to be like -- secluded, private, and gorgeous. There are eight basic rooms in the original building, and six in the more recent expansion, with frills such as fireplaces. Along the shore of the lake, private cabins with fireplaces and Jacuzzis sit in private seclusion. No attempt at old-world opulence is made here; the focus is on the outside, where it should rightly be. There's really no need to go anywhere else; the restaurant is top-notch, serving inventive local cuisine like game meats and fish. Room rates include continental breakfast, afternoon tea, use of canoes on the lake, and naturalist presentations and hikes.
