Lake Placid Lodge

• This exclusive inn, a Relais & Châteaux member, is set right on Lake Placid outside of town, with an upscale rustic look (very Adirondack) and lots of privacy. Sadly, a fire destroyed the main lodge in December 2005, but the lodge stayed open and made clever use of its lakeside cabins. Best of all, a rebuilding effort is forging ahead, to be completed in 2008, so when the lodge's three rooms, eight suites, eight additional cabins, and expanded deck open, you can expect the place to be back in its finest form. Cabins will still afford the ultimate in luxury and privacy -- most are set right on the lake's shore, with stone fireplaces, giant beds, and picture windows. They're the perfect place to sit in an overstuffed sofa and watch the moon as it rises and reflects off the lake.
