Anyone can play it safe and go to a cheap fast food restaurant, but there are plenty of low-cost local options up at Lake Tahoe. So put your money where your mouth is...and have some money left over.
Let's start with a good breakfast at Rude Brothers Bagels in South Lake Tahoe. They have an excellent variety of bagels and fair trade coffee. If you want to sit down and do some people-watching, have breakfast at Heidi's Pancake House. You can get either breakfast or lunch at the Red Hut Café in South Shore or at JAX on the Tracks in Truckee.
For lunch, keep it cheap with a great burger at Burger Me in Truckee, which was featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show. In the Tahoe City area get a sandwich or soup at the Fat Cat Deli or at Rosie's Café.
For dinner you can keep it simple with a great pizza and pitcher of beer at Mofo's Pizza in Incline Village, some Indian food at the Taj Mahal on the South Shore or some good Latin food at Sol y Lago on the North Shore.
