There are various things to do around Lake Tahoe. Reno, The Biggest Little City in the World is right down the Mt. Rose Highway from North Lake Tahoe and the authentic Wild West town of Virginia City is just above Reno in the Virginia Range. In both of these places you can gamble, go sightseeing, eat at great restaurants and check out a show or concert. Visit the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City or the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno.
You can also head down Kingsbury Grade to the oldest town in Nevada, Genoa. There is shopping, some excellent restaurants (including La Ferme) and Walley's Hot Springs. Here you can sit in several hot pools and look out over the Carson Valley. Just north of Genoa is Nevada's capital, Carson City where you can learn more about the state's history at the Nevada State Museum.
On the north and west side of Lake Tahoe, you can visit the small town of Sierraville and go to the Sierra Hot Springs (clothing optional), or head over to Donner Lake for some swimming or kayaking and then over to the historic town of Truckee for shopping and dinner.
