  • The Best of NileGuide
  • One of the cheapest (and best) ways to stay in Lake Tahoe is at the various campgrounds around the area. You can camp right on the lake, up in the mountains or in some hidden backcountry just off a trail.

If you want to be right by the lake or you want a great view of the lake, camp at either D.L. Bliss State Park's campground or Sugar Pine Point's campground. Bayview Campground near Emerald Bay has a nice view and some hiking trails into the foothills. Emerald Bay has a campground on the east side of the bay as well as a boat-in campground on the west side.

For larger RVs, try Camp Richardson on the South Shore or Zephyr Cove on the East Shore. These places can get crowded in the summer, though. For some places just outside of Tahoe, visit Blue Lakes, Caples, Silver Lake or Lake Kirkwood off of Hwy. 88 near Meyers. These campgrounds get less people, especially during the week.

For some backcountry hiking and camping, visit Desolation Wilderness where there are numerous alpine lakes and flat areas to pitch a tent. An overnight backcountry permit will be required.
