The best drive to take around Lake Tahoe is...well...around Lake Tahoe. The road around the lake encompasses several highways within both California and Nevada and will give you some of the best views of the big blue lake.
Some of the best views are coming up Highway 50 from Carson City as you come up to Spooner Lake, around Emerald Bay and around Carnelian Bay on the North Shore, and coming up Highway 431 from Reno over the Mt. Rose Summit.
Some other popular drives around the Tahoe area include the drive from Truckee up to the Rainbow Bridge above Donner Lake, around Fallen Leaf Lake and along Highway 88 just south of Lake Tahoe. On 88 you will pass Caples Lake, Kirkwood, Sorenson's Resort and Hope Valley. In the fall, this area is very popular for the colorful aspen leaves turning gold and orange.
