Lake Tahoe has an interesting history. Starting with the ancient Native American Tribes who lived in the area during the summers up to the 1960 Olympics which were held at Squaw Valley USA, the history of the area can be viewed at various locations around the lake.
There are several museums at Lake Tahoe that have several exhibits on Tahoe history. Start out with the Gatekeeper's Log Cabin Museum at the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society in Tahoe City or the Tahoe Maritime Museum just down the road in Homewood. For lovers of architecture, visit Vikingsholm and the Tea House on Fanette Island in Emerald Bay. You can also visit the Ehrman Mansion in Sugar Pine Point State Park.
If your history includes collectible poker chips, head to some of the older casinos which entertained such people Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Al Pacino. The Tahoe Biltmore and the Cal/Neva were favorites during the 1950s and 1960s.
A little farther away, you can visit a silver baron's mansion in Washoe Valley, the oldest bar in Nevada in Genoa or the oldest hotel in Nevada in Gold Hill.
