Lake Tahoe is a popular place in both summer and winter, so it pays to know how to get off the beaten path and where to find the less crowded areas around the lake.
If you are into sports, you can bike or kayak your way away from the crowds with Sierra Nevada Adventures. Or you can find your own way around the lake on several trails including the Tahoe Rim Trail, the trail system in Desolation Wilderness, or the trail up to Mt. Tallac.
In wintertime, strap on some skis and snowshoes and head into the Tahoe Meadows for some communing with nature. Or try the Royal Gorge area for some quiet snow time. In winter, Donner Lake is a much more quiet area than Tahoe and the hot springs in Sierraville are a quiet escape.
For a little more relaxation, try the areas around Hwy. 88. Kirkwood ski resort is one of the least visited resorts in the area and there is plenty of hiking around the area, as well as some more hot springs at Grover's near Markleeville.
