Bridgeport Ranger District

Description:

• Located within eastern Nevada and California, the Bridgeport Ranger District offers visitors to the area several wilderness areas, together with differing recreational opportunities. These include: Fishing and Hunting: Summer starts when fishing season opens. This is a popular thought among the hundreds of visitors that arrive in Bridgeport the last weekend in April to catch that first one of the season. Numerous lakes and streams provide many opportunities to test your skill and luck in fishing. Both California Fish and Game and Nevada Department of Wildlife stock many of the lakes and streams in the area, but we do not have a schedule of actual stocking times. The season closes the last Saturday in October for most of Mono County.

  Hiking and Backpacking: The trails beginning in the Hoover Wilderness provide easy access to Yosemite's backcountry.

  River Rafting: Bridgeport area has limited whitewater rafting and kayak opportunities are available on the West Walker River. The rafting season varies greatly from year to year depending on snowpack and spring weather. High water may occur anytime from May to July, or not at all. The West Walker is a class IV river and is not recommended for the novice rafter or kayaker.

  Mountain Biking : What better way to enjoy the area than to travel by mountain bike and join one of the fastest growing recreational activities. Opportunities abound for mountain biking in and around this area.

  Rock Climbing: Many rock climbing options can be found. Consult The Climbers Guide to the High Sierra by Steve Roper.

  Nature: Bird watching, nature photography and a host of other outdoor activities are possible on the Bridgeport and Carson Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

  Facilities in this region include, wildlife viewing, bird watching, scenic viewing, camping, nature study, river rafting, fishing, hunting, wilderness, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hiking, plus backpacking.

  Bridgeport Ranger District sits on western Nevada and encroaches into California. The area is served by Highways 50, 80 and 95.
