Description:

  • Starting at Virginia Lakes Trailhead, this beautiful trail takes you by an historic miner's cabin, four (or more ) mountain lakes, and up over 11,000 ft, overlooking the grandeur of the Hoover Wilderness and Yosemite backcountry. At the beginning of the trail there are many "side" trails to access various fishing points of Big Virginia and Blue Lakes, so follow the most well-traveled path. The cabin is located 3/4 mile from the trailhead, just beyond Blue Lake. Cooney Lake is only 1/2 mile beyond, and Big Frog Lake is only 1/2 mile or so after that. After Big Frog Lake, the trail climbs out of the trees and into a talus slope, where rocky switchbacks allow you to hike to Summit Pass. There is a stream crossing above Blue Lake and two crossings at the Frog Lakes. They can require creek shoes.

The Summit Pass is usually very windy. Check snow conditions of trail at the Ranger Station. June and July hikers will probably encounter snow.
