Lake Tahoe Westshore in the Winter

Description:

The West Shore of Lake Tahoe is the most picturesque. There is great skiing, dining and non skiers can enjoy shopping and sightseeing. There are 2 quaint old west towns in this area, Truckee and Tahoe City, both are off of Route 89. There are a number of lake side restaurants with wonderful views. Both Truckee and Tahoe City have music on weekends, but in that is not enough the North Shore has a number of casinos with some big name headliners.

Day Note:

If you heading up to Tahoe you can take a easy first day. This is geared towards folks driving up from Sacramento or San Francisco on Route 80. First thing you can do is stop at Royal Gorge to Cross Country ski or for non skiers there is the Donner State Park, which has a donner party exhibition which is very interesting. You can then check into you b&b and go out to eat at a very rustic tahoe eatery.

The Ehrman Mansion is a top choice for Tahoe weddings.

    Description:

Sugar Pine Point State Park contains one of the finest remaining natural areas on Lake Tahoe. With nearly two miles of lake front property, the park has dense forests of pine, fir, aspen and juniper. Deep-line anglers fish the lake's 300-foot deep underwater ledges for trout and salmon. Another attraction is the museum in the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion (also known as Pine Lodge), a summer home built in 1903 in a grove of pine and cedar. During winter, the park features cross-country skiing areas. A 175 site campground is open year round, with hot showers available in the summer months. Many miles of hiking trails within the park and a swimming beach provide visitors with a variety of relaxing summer activities. Winter visitors to the park will find over 20 kilometers of marked cross country ski trails and a heated restroom in the General Creek campground. Interpretive presentations on a variety of winter related subjects are presented most weekends, from January through March. While at Sugar Pine Point State Park, be sure to stop at the Nature Center located in the day use area by the Erhman Mansion. Our Local Expert Says:

Home to Vikingsholm and Fanette Island (Lake Tahoe's only island), Emerald Bay truly is one of Tahoe's prettiest corners.

    Description:

Emerald Bay State Park is a state park located around Emerald Bay, a National Natural Landmark, at Lake Tahoe, California. The park is home to Eagle Falls and Vikingsholm, a 38-room mansion that is one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere.[citation needed] The park contains the only island in Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island. The park is accessible by State Route 89 near the southwest shore of the lake. Emerald Bay is one of Lake Tahoe's most photographed and popular locations. In 1969, Emerald Bay was recognized as a National Natural Landmark by the federal Department of the Interior. In 1994, California State Parks included the surrounding water of the bay as a part of the park, making Emerald Bay one of the first underwater parks of its type in the state, protecting the various wrecks and other items on the bay's bottom. The park is located directly south of D.L. Bliss State Park. Summer temperatures at the park range from the low 40 °F (4 °C) at night to mid-70 °F (25 °C) during the day, and during the winter visitors will usually experience temperatures between 20 and 40 °F (-7 and 4 °C). During harsh winters, the bay freezes over. The bay is... read more
