Description:

  • The sites where ancient Hawaiians worshipped are known as heiau. There are several of them in the islands; this is the largest one on Lana'i. It is located past Garden of the Gods on the red dirt road that leads out to Polihua Beach. Although the ancient religion is no longer officially acknowledged and the heiau is mostly ruins, Hawaiians still consider it a sacred place. The site can only be reached in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
