The island of Langkawi is quite small, and accommodation is geared solely to a tourist audience. The main entry point of the island is Kuah, where most of the duty-free shops are located. This is a great jump-off point for those looking to go island hopping. If you’re looking for the liveliest part of town, this is definitely it. The Bayview Langkawi Hotel is a quick five minutes away from the jetty where you can hire boats to go to other islands or to the mainland. A moderately priced hotel, this offers amenities unusual for its price range, like an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, spa and gym. There are also golf ranges about a ten-minute drive away.
A more rustic and private experience is offered at the Kampung Tok Senik Resort. Here you can hire a chalet that is designed after a traditional Malay kampung house, complete with woodcarvings and a straw roof. Comfort is not sacrificed for décor, however, and each room is equipped with air-conditioning, television etc. Hidden inland, this resort is perfect for those looking to sleep away from the crowded beaches and tourists hotspots.
The main tourist drag is Pantai Cenang, about 20 kilometers from Kuah and on the western coast of the island. Here you can find the most popular (and beautiful) beaches, as well as many beachfront restaurants and bars. The crème de la crème of Langkawi accommodation is here at the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort. Similar to the Kampung Tok Senik, it offers Malaysian style chalets, but close to the sandy beaches of Pantai Cenang. The resort offers a spa, its very own beachfront restaurant (Noodle Bar) and cafes where you can take a break from beach activities.
The Andaman Hotel is located at the other end of the island, between the Mat Cincang mountain range and Andaman Sea. Here, location is key. Set in a 50 million year old rainforest, this hotel offers some of the most spectacular views on the island. Get the Seaview Room or Deluxe Rainforest Room to take full advantage of this hotel’s location.
