The Best of NileGuide

While many tourists go to Langkawi because of its duty-free shopping, the main attraction here is the island’s pristine natural beauty. Water lovers will be in paradise with an array of beach activities offered, including snorkeling and kayaking. The main beach area is Pantai Cenang, at the southern tip of the island. It spans about a mile, and there are a number of small beachfront restaurants and cafes to satisfy your hunger after a hard of swimming. Pantai Tenga is the smaller cousin of Cenang, and offers a respite from the tourist hordes.
The most isolated beach is Pantai Kok, located at the western end of the island. Nearby is the Oriental Village where you can hop on to cable cars that take you to the peak of Mat Cincang Mountains. Here you can find spectacular views of all the Langkawi islands and the Tarutao Islands of Thailand. Also along the mountain range is the beautiful Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls. The more daring travelers can hike up to the area where the seven pools gather to spill into the waterfall. Be warned however, that the hike is quite steep and long, so check the weather conditions before you make the trek.
Closer to sea level is the Pulau Payar Marine Park, which comprises the northern part of the Straits of Malacca. To get here, one can take a ferry from Langkawi and make a day trip seeing the marine life and beaches of Pulau Payar. While there are no formal accommodation arrangements here, visitors are allowed to camp for a few days with permission from the Fisheries Department at Alor Setar. This is an ideal spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing as the water is crystal clear. The park is a sanctuary for much marine life, so you can spot rare and wonderful creatures like the red-spotted sweetlips and pennant butterfly fish.
