Before the Strip, there was Fremont Street, and downtown Las Vegas hotels are still a great choice for any visitor. You'll get the feel of an earlier Vegas era in downtown's smaller, older hotel casinos. Staying at any downtown Las Vegas hotel puts you within easy walking distance of several casinos, the Fremont Street Experience light show, and live entertainment.
The Golden Nugget is downtown's premier hotel casino. A remodeled swimming pool area includes an aquarium worthy of any Strip property, and it has the full range of amenities--spa, restaurants, and entertainment. The Buffet--so impressive that it doesn't require any other name--is one of downtown's best smorgasbords.
The El Cortez, just down the street, has done its best to keep its rooms updated and its ambiance pure Old Vegas. If you like smaller, classic casinos with plenty of personality, the El Cortez is a good choice.
The Gold Spike's casino and guest rooms were recently extensively renovated to modernize the property. The same owners also acquired the property next to the Gold Spike, formerly the Travel Inn, adding and renovating its 50 rooms. All rooms now have flat screen televisions and iPod docks.
Downtown might not have the flash and spectacle of the Strip, but right outside the front door of any downtown hotel, you'll find the Fremont Street Experience--a huge overhead canopy with nightly light shows. During the day, it's a pedestrian walkway. Look for reasonable room rates, great views of Viva Vision (the light show's formal name), and good restaurants at Fitzgerald's and the Four Queens.
