Downtown Las Vegas is where the city truly got its start, and if you're looking for things to do here, you'll find casinos, the Viva Vision light show, and historic sites.
The Fremont Street Experience turned Glitter Gulch into a pedestrian walkway, and the canopy overhead does more than make shade during the hot summer months. The Viva Vision light show fills the canopy with music and images at night. The LED lights' clarity creates vivid pictures. When the show starts, the casinos dim their lights, and almost everyone stops to look up. The FSE makes it easy to wander from casino to casino, and sidewalk vendors and performers give the area a fun, adult carnival feel.
The Neon Museum has several signs displayed along Fremont Street, and of course the best time to see them is at night. These are the remains of Old Vegas, and downtown is the perfect place for them.
Downtown Las Vegas is also the site of the city's earliest non-native settlements. The Old Mormon Fort and the Springs Preserve have preserved two of Las Vegas' most important historic locations. The grassy meadows that once covered the areas around the springs at the Springs Preserve gave the city its name-Las Vegas means "the meadows" in Spanish. The grounds of the preserve hold hiking trails, archaeological sites, and a museum. At the Old Mormon Fort, restored and preserved buildings are peacefully tucked away from the traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard. Take a walk through the ranch house and imagine living here without air conditioning-pioneers in early Las Vegas were definitely tough.
