  • The neighborhood of North Las Vegas/Nellis has some unusual things to do. In recent years, newer tracts of homes and shopping malls have spread west of this area into a northwestern portion of Las Vegas now called Centennial. Formerly largely rural, this is a part of Las Vegas where you can still see horse arenas in some of the older residential areas.

At the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, you won't see any actual horses, but you can see the horsepower. When NASCAR comes to town, this is a very busy place. The main track isn't the only track, and if you're a race car fan, check ahead on their website to see what events are in town. The Richard Petty Driving School also operates here, so you can ride along in a race car or learn to drive one.

Fast cars seem like natural in Las Vegas, but this part of town also has some things you don't expect in Vegas, like the Gilcrease Orchard. Nearby, the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary started as a haven for birds but takes in other animals as well. Both of these things to do are kid-friendly, inexpensive, and totally without slot machines. Also good for families, the large Floyd Lamb Park has fishing ponds, historic buildings, and fossil beds.

But slot machines are part of what makes Las Vegas what it is, so you don't have to go far to find a neighborhood casino. The Texas and the Cannery are local places, smaller casinos that are budget friendly.
