Things to do near downtown Las Vegas are a good way to get a feel for Old Vegas. This is the place where Las Vegas as we know it got its start. And what better way to get a feeling for Vegas' days gone by than with neon signs? The Neon Museum has a series of free displays on Fremont Street, which makes it easy to see both old neon and the new LED lights that put on a nightly overhead show at the Fremont Street Experience. Nearby, the Neon Boneyard, open to tours by appointment only, gives visitors a peek back into time with the neon signs that represent all that's left of Old Vegas hotels. History is definitely a major factor in many things you'll find to do near downtown Las Vegas.
The Old Mormon Fort sits on the site of the earliest non-native settlement in the Las Vegas Valley. The entrance fee of only $2 is a bargain, and history buffs will especially enjoy hearing about the early days of Las Vegas and the history of the buildings which have been preserved. If you're traveling with kids, you can also stop in at the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, across the street from the fort, for some hands-on learning disguised as fun.
For a wider--and higher--perspective of Las Vegas, you can visit the Stratosphere, which has the highest observation tower in the United States. And if you've lost a little too much at the tables, the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop will give you a chance to pick up some extra cash and see the place where the hit television show is filmed.
