  • At the south end of the Las Vegas Strip, visitors can see lions, sharks, and a castle. It's easy to wander in this area, which not only has overhead pedestrian walkways but also offers trams (between Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and Excalibur) and an access point to the Las Vegas Monorail. The south end of the Strip, where Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue meet, is home to a wealth of things to see and do.

The New York-New York Hotel Casino recreates the Big Apple, but with an added bonus: a roller coaster that circles the outside of the property. The exterior of the hotel squeezes several key features of New York into one place: the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Empire State Building. Around it all, a roller coaster speeds riders along at up to 67 m.p.h., twisting, diving, and rolling.

Across the street, the MGM Grand Hotel Casino has an unusual feature: lions. The lion has been a icon of MGM films for years, and here you can see the real thing. The exhibit is free and placards around it detail information about the big cats. It's not a large exhibit, but it is conveniently located close to the pedestrian access bridge that connects the MGM to the Tropicana's side of the street.

Visitors can shop at two large malls, Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood and Crystals at City Center. The Miracle Mile is one of the Strip's shopping malls that offers free entertainment by way of its design--a ceiling that mimics the sky, elaborate faux buildings, and an indoor rain storm. Crystals focuses more on its high-end retailers like Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, and Versace--but in a sleeker style.
