  • Las Vegas visitors who enjoy outdoor recreation have many options in and around the city. Rock climbing, mountain biking, and even skiing are available close to Las Vegas. If you need to buy or rent some gear, two well-known outfitters give visitors the opportunity to make sure they've got everything they need to enjoy any kind of outdoor recreation around Las Vegas.

If you're a rock climber, you'll want to investigate the sandstone cliffs at Red Rock Canyon, known as a world-class climbing destination. Although Red Rock has routes for climbers at every level of experience, the sandstone has its own unique characteristics--including a tendency to crumble after the rain. The Bureau of Land Management advises climbers to do some homework before attempting any of the routes and lists resources and tips on its website.

Most people don't think of snow at all when they think of Las Vegas, but in winter you can ski or snowboard at Lee Canyon in Mt. Charleston. Equipment rentals are available, which is particularly handy for visitors who don't happen to have their skis or snowboards with them.

Every outdoor enthusiast knows you have to have good gear to climb, bike or fish, and two Las Vegas stores offer everything you might need while you're in town. Popular REI has a store on the west side of Las Vegas, conveniently located close to Red Rock Canyon, and they offer rentals of camping equipment. For those who enjoy fishing and hunting, the Bass Pro Shops, next to the Silverton, is a super-sized store that includes a huge freshwater aquarium.
