Outdoors Things to Do in Las Vegas

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • Las Vegas offers more than casinos--it's also a great place to find things to do outdoors. The Mojave Desert's rugged terrain attracts adventure-seekers from everywhere. In the summer, the intense heat means you'll have to enjoy Las Vegas' outdoor attractions in the early morning or late evening, but the rest of the year you can get outside almost any time.

Red Rock Canyon draws rock climbers from around the world. From many overlooks, if you look closely at the cliff faces, you'll see climbers ascending the sandstone. Hiking trails, a terrific visitors' center, and a scenic drive give visitors several options to enjoy this beautiful and unique area. The Valley of Fire, which is further from Las Vegas, also holds striking rock formations, although rock climbing is not permitted there. The Valley of Fire is on the edge of Lake Mead, the huge man-made lake where you can go boating or fishing, or simply explore the miles of desert shoreline.

On the outskirts of Boulder City, Bootleg Canyon is home to two adventure destinations: a mountain biking park and a zipline. The series of mountain biking trails in Bootleg will test any mountain biker's mettle against the desert terrain, and some of them are tough enough to have earned "Epic" designation from the International Mountain Bicycling Association. High above the canyon, a zipline zings riders along at up to 50 m.p.h.

The little-known Wetlands Park, on the far east side of the Las Vegas valley, is a haven for wildlife of all kinds. Bird watchers especially enjoy the park, which provides essential habitat for migratory and resident birds.
