  • NileGuide Expert tip:

History buffs will be interested to know that in the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps helped to construct parts of the museum.

  • Description:

    • The Anasazi, ancient Native Americans, once lived in the area around the Colorado River. When the waters from Hoover Dam began filling Lake Mead, the archaeological sites that documented the Anasazi's presence were doomed to go underwater. The area's sites, known as Pueblo Grande de Nevada, were quickly excavated and the artifacts housed at the Lost City Museum.

The museum's adobe building is historic in itself. It was once the headquarters for the Boulder Dam State Park, a predecessor to Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The building was constructed by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), the work program established during the Great Depression.

Today the Lost City Museum is a Nevada State Museum and hosts local artists and festivals. The artifacts recovered in the 1930s are on display. The recreated pueblos give visitors an idea of what living conditions were like in the days long before air conditioning.
