Description:
At the end of a residential cul-de-sac at the top of a hill, tucked in the woods and looking out to the mountains in the distance, this converted monastery is an intriguing B&B. The decor is a riot of styles: English country-cottage braided rugs, wood roosters, medieval tapestries, and knights' armor. Each room has a French-Catholic theme (La Chapelle, La Divine), and La Cardinale features a red double whirlpool in the bedroom corner. In winter, the antique piano in the main room gets covered with miniature houses to make a multi-leveled village tableau. All but one room look out at the mountains; the last faces the woods where deer wander by. Have a light dinner to take full advantage of the opulent breakfast: fresh croissants, French cheeses, quiche, just-tapped maple water, individual soufflés. This could be the best breakfast in all the Laurentians.
