Top 10:

Lausanne Art Museums and Galleries

  • The Best of NileGuide
  • The most famous and most visited museum is the Olympic Museum built by the International Olympic Committee to honor the spirit of the games.

The Fondation de LHermitage offers expositions of some the most famous artists in the world, past and present. The Fine Arts Museum is devoted to the works of artists who painted in western Switzerland in the 18th -19th centuries. This Palace at Riponne also has the Archaeological and Historical Museum, the Geological Museum, the Museum of Paleontology, the, and the Zoological Museum.

Next to the Cathedrale there are two fascinating but very different museums. The Museum of Design & Contemporary Applied Arts (MUDAC) has an international collection of art work and has an especially good glass work collection. One of particular interest to visitors also is the History of Lausanne Museum.

For something truly extraordinary, don't miss the Collection de l'Art Brut which was a movement that began in the 1940s when artwork was displayed made by prisoners, the mentally ill, and the criminally insane.

Another unusual museum in the Fondation Calude Verdan which is an art plus science focus started in 1997. The permanent collection concerns everything to know, touch, or see about the hand. Another museum also linking to science is the Espace des Inventions mainly for children 7-15 years old with interactive and educational exhibits but adults also love it.

No visit to the ancient Roman city of Losanna could be complete without a visit to the Roman ruins at Vidy and the Lausnne-Vidy Roman Museum across the street.
