San Juan Bautista de Subtiavae

Description:

  • Located 1km (1/2 mile) west of the central plaza in the old indigenous quarter of Subtavia is León's oldest intact church. Restored in the 1990s, it is remarkable for the gorgeous sun icon that's carved into its ceiling. The clergy placed such an unusual pagan symbol in a Catholic church to attract an initially reluctant local audience. The arched timber roof held up by stout wooden pillars and the intricate filigreed altar is a testament to the amazing skill of the indigenous craftsmen.
