Description:
This is no ordinary Hampton Inn: Col Alto is an 1827 manor house built on a plantation then on the outskirts of town. The carefully renovated mansion now houses 10 bedrooms comparable to deluxe country inns or B&Bs. An interior designer individually decorated these luxurious quarters with made-in-Virginia linens, reproduction antiques, and bright, vivid paints and fabrics. Accommodations range in size from huge, light-filled rooms on the front of the house to smaller, more private ones in the rear. One unit even has a semi-round "fan" window of the style favored by Thomas Jefferson. Manor house guests can choose to have breakfast and the morning newspaper delivered to their rooms. Rooms in the new, L-shaped motel wing next door are somewhat larger than average and have microwave ovens, coffeemakers, robes, and irons and ironing boards; some have balconies overlooking a courtyard with outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool. Guests in both wings get complimentary continental breakfasts in the original dining room, but it's standard Hampton Inn fare, not a fancy breakfast like those served at most bed-and-breakfasts.
