  • Lima is city full of history. Ancient times, as well as Pre-Columbian, Inca, Colonial and Republican times have left their special stamp in this modern city, providing a mosaic of interesting details to discover

If you are fond of discovering history, Lima has many things to offer you. Starting downtown, as most city tours do, you will find lots of places, located pretty close one to another, dated from the times of the Spanish foundation of this city.

The first sight to see is probably the Plaza de Armas, or Plaza Mayor (Main Square), the heart of the historic downtown, comprising the Cathedral, the Government's Palace and the Palacio Municipal (the headquarters or the city's government) as well. Other spots that is a must in Lima downtown are is the Iglesia de San Francisco and its museum, that keeps old catacombs since this used to house a cemetery during Lima's colonial times.

Another must is an excursion to Pachacamac ruins, that you can book online with your travel agency or get some help from your hotel clerk to organize one. Canta is another popular historical destination, located in an Andean town outside Lima city; but during the summer it may not be available due to the rains. Lima's port, Callao, has also a very interesting spot: the Fortaleza del Real Felipe.

Other historic spots located in the city are, for example, Huaca Huallamarca and Huaca Pucllana, as well as the museums Rafael Larco Herrera and Museo Nacional de Antropología, Arqueología e Historia
