In my experience I would say that the best way to safe money is going by yourself and maybe ask a local to teach you the place, because taking a tour by an agency would be so expensive in tme most part of the cases and you have to follow an schedulle and you wont have a oppotunity to improvise.

If you're young and dynamic, I strongly recommend you to go by yourself. If you have some friends here, it's a big point. A tour costs an amount that you would rather save and eventually you will be going alone.

When you are visiting a country unless you know someone or have been there before it's better by yourself.
I would recommend a tour. Condor Travel has very good packages.Enjoy your visit and let me know how it went.

Definitely, GO BY YOURSELF!!! If you have the info in advance, you'd travel with no problems and it's safe travel along my country and it's more fascinating doing it like this. In tours you have to follow schedules and the time it's limited..NO WAY! GO BY YOURSELF IS A "MUST"
Good luck!
people here would seggest you to take a tour, because lot's of travel agencies are here...

Hi! if u want to save some money I would say "go by yourself".. but if you come from so far away (well not soooo far away! XD) and u want to learn and discover this country I would recommend you a tour, with good guides who can explain u 'bout the city, the history, etc.. Maybe are some $$ more but u can come back to home and know that you enjoy and learn something. I always travel by my own.. but sometimes is good idea take a city tour or something like that.. I don't have a company or work in tourism but I can give u this advise like a tourist too (I love to travel) good luck!!!!

i think its better to go by yourself, you spend less and you can also get to know the city even better and you are not in a hurry. but u gotta be careful to where you go. the public transport is cheap and food also, besides there are good backpackers hotels on the districts of miraflores and barranco where u can stay, and those are very safe neighbourhoods.

I think the best is a mix of both options. Come by yourself and from time to time take small tours here and there or meet nice locals and go with them if they have something nice to propose you. Lake titicaca is better if you go by your self, sleeping homestay in indigenous communities in Taquile, Llachón, Amantani or Anapia. It is very easy and safe to travel on your own in Peru nowadays.

depends on the time you have!
going by yourself is a lot of fun! going with a tour allows you to spare time!
As Antoine says, a mix of both is probably the best, but take the time to choose the best/more convenient operator for you.
I organize trips to Choquequirao, an excellent alternative to overcrowded Machu Picchu. visit my page: www.pasionandina.net
I would be happy to give you all information needed, even if you don't take any of my tours!

Travelling by yourself is the best way to save money but you must be careful to go only safe places, you can not go to places out of touristic routes.

Any extra question, do it

dear Grace, honestly, if you can spare some time to contact locals as myself, probably you can organize a really tailored tour, fitting all your personal interests; on the other hand, if you just want to forget about everything and have someone taking care even of carrying your luggage around, an organized tour will be much better, personally I've found tha later good for a first visit, but there's never one that suits someone perfectly as when made by oneself

Mostly, it depends of how much time you have. If you have all the time in the world, and you want to soak in the culture of a place, go by yourself and get your information from locals and fellow travelers. On the other hand, if you only have a couple of weeks, then you will need someone to help arrange your trip. Check out www.centrotinku.com and www.tinkutours.com and get in touch if you want. Good luck,

The best .... go to your point of destination and then take any tour you want by yourself, you can choose the tour that you want or even to do it by your own then you can take the time that you want to be there and the money that you want to expend at your arrival always ask one, two or more people suggestions, advises, about your tour and then chose the one that you like the best. have fun!! and enjoy Peru!!
