The fountain and the Plaza as well have both survived through earthquakes, social revolts and urban development. Here you will find some very important and historical buildings like the Cathedral, the Archbishopric Palace, the Municipality and the Government Palace. The Official Act of Independence of Peru was proclaimed here, in1821, and the first bullfighting events were also held here. Another interesting spots nearby are the Casa del Oidor, the and very specially the Casa de Aliaga, property of the descendants of one of Lima first founders, still very well preserved. Description:

It's a nice U-shaped beach with clean sand that is thicker than usual, so it does not stick to your skin too easily. Its waters are blue, transparent, and very cold; this beach is one of the most visited because it does not have big or strong waves. So it's perfect for relaxing and for certain water sports. But watch your step when you enter into the waves, because the sea gets deep very quickly.  Also, there are many small bars, clubs and nightlife spots, so this beach is mostly preferred by young people seeking for party, rather than by families with children: now and then some clubs take the party outside, to the beach itself. There is lots of parking space (the usage fees are regulated by the local municipality, and it's usually a flat fee) and its restaurants offer dishes prepared with seafood provided by local fishermen.

Great display of Inca and Pre-Inca pottery and textiles

    Description:

This is the oldest and the most important museum run by the state, due to the huge number (more than 10,000) of artifacts it houses in its exhibition halls and repositories as well: pottery, textiles, metal and stone objects, among many other surprises from ancient Peru history, but also documents and photographs from colonial and republican times. This is a museum commited to researching, conservation and dissemination of Peruvian cultural heritage and knowledge. And this is the museum which displays the Peruvian history´s complete chronology in a clear, didactic way. It is located at a historic building too, since a Spanish Viceroy and two of the Peruvian Independence heros lived here. The museum includes a virtual exhibition room specially intended for children, and in 2010 opened a hall dedicated to the cultures of the Amazon regions. Santa Rosa is a much-worshipped figure in Peru; today, her house is a sanctuary that serves as a testimony to her life. The hermitage that she built has been conserved in the garden, and so has the well into which she threw the only key to a chain that she wore round her waist as a sign of penitence. She was declared a saint in 1671 by Pope Clement X. This church was built in her honor in 1670, next to the large house where she was born in 1586.

An opportunity to get close to this painting revered by thousands of believers.

    Description:

History states in 1655 that a black slave painted this image of Christ crucified on the wall of one of the slaves' quarters: soon after, an earthquake destroyed Lima, but the painted wall remained. The fact was considered a miracle and the image came to be worshipped, with the viceroy himself among its devotees. The image, known nowadays the Lord of the Miracles, has become the patron and protector of Lima, and church you see today was built on the place of the original painting. A replica is carried in an impressive procession that gathers thousands of his devotees onto Lima's streets.

    Another Lima's underrated must-see

    Description:

Located very close to Lima downtown, the Cerro San Cristobal (Saint Cristobal Hill) is a 400m high peak from which you can have a privileged, unique panoramic view of Lima: on a clear day, with a little luck, you may see the ships anchored at Callao Bay. Legends say that this hill was named got its name after an indigenous rebellion in 1536, after which a wooden cross was placed at the peak to protect the city. Nowadays there's a huge cross instead and a site museum that houses historic photos and documents of old Lima and related to the cross. But the best is the stunning panoramic view, specially in Summer or Spring. The best time is very early in the morning or late afternoon. You can take a bus at the Plaza the Armas (on weekends), which will take you to the top of the San Cristobal, stay there 20-30 minutes and then bring you back.

Famous for its good surfing waves

    Description:

This a beautiful, long beach with some beautiful waves, where some of the Peruvian surf champions started their training. To get to this beach you have to take the Panamericana Sur road and go to the km. 41; it is not far from Lima, specially from east and south districts like Miraflores, Surco or San Borja: now, once we reach km. 41, the beach itself is pretty near. Many people choose to come here because it is relatively easy to arrive with public transportation and because it is not too hard to find accomodations; there are hotels and many local residents rent temporarily their houses (or just rooms) to those who want to spend some days or weeks at this summer spot. Take note, however, that getting there on weekends on summer can be painful due to the traffic jams. You will find plenty of restaurants and clubs, that in summer organize many events and parties.

    Walk around old Lima

    Description:

This promenade was built in 1611 by the Marquis de Montesclaros, and later rebuilt in 1770 by Viceroy Manuel de Amat. It was adorned with three fountains donated by Agustín Hipólito de Landaburu, the first impresario of Lima's Plaza de Toros (bullfighting ring). In 1856, the president Ramón Castilla gave it a new and definitive look, importing beautiful forged iron railings from England to enclose it. It is formed by a wide central avenue, lined with twelve fine Carrara marble statues depicting the signs of the zodiac, as well as 100 iron urns and 50 marble seats which line both sides and an elegant spouting fountain at the end of the Alameda. For many years, this was the only promenade that existed in Lima. It is surrounded by the colonial churches of 'Santa Liberata', 'Virgen del Patrocinio' and the church and convent of 'Los Descalzos'.

    An oasis in the desert

    Description:

Peruvians have used these coastal hills since ancient times, and vestiges of nomadic hunters and gatherers have surfaced in the form of cave paintings etched into the rocks. Las Lomas Lachay covers an area of 5,070 hectares; its natural and unique formation is due to the condensation of winter fog on the hillsides, which gives rise to seasonal plants and unique wildlife. The area hosts 74 different floral species and 31 species of exotic trees, including eucalyptus, cypress, pine and grevilla. In addition, 55 bird species have been recorded, while foxes, white-tailed deer, vizcachas (chinchilla-related animals), and various species of rodents and lizards are also present. It is best to visit the reserve in winter (July to November), during which time the area is in bloom. It is recommended to take a jacket or raincoat, although the temperature at Las Lomas de Lachay rarely goes below 12°C in winter (and can reach up to 25°C in summer). The reserve has marked signposted paths, areas for barbecues and camping, toilets, recreation areas and an information center. To get there, exit the Panamerican Highway North at Kilometer 105 and follow the road which is hard-paved for 3km.

Right at the beach in Miraflores

    Description:

Any time a restaurant in Peru lists all prices in dollars, you know it's not going to be cheap. Costa Verde, perched on a promontory jutting out into the ocean along the "green coast" south of Miraflores, is probably as expensive a meal as you'll have in Peru, but it's also good enough to draw a decent number of Limeños celebrating special occasions. It draws a bigger share of foreigners, as evidenced by the touristy little national flags the hostess places on everyone's table. The big-time seafood buffet is what makes everyone's eyes bulge. There's a daily lunch buffet and also a huge gourmet dinner buffet ($60/£30 a head), which the restaurant claims is registered in the Guinness Book of Records. The regular menu seems not to have changed in more than 3 decades of business, but you can't really argue with sea bass with wild mushrooms and morel sauce with scallop mousse, or basil and ricotta gnocchi with river shrimp in saffron sauce. Sit in the glass-enclosed atrium -- although it's rather devoid of character, you'll get to hear the sound of waves crashing against the shore. Then again, that could be the sound of your bank account groaning.
