NileGuide Expert Says:
Here, the pastéis de nata have their own name - pastéis de Belém - and are simply the best in town!
NileGuide Expert tip:
Beat the crowds by avoiding the weekends, or arriving early in the morning.
Description:
- No visit to Belém is complete without nipping into this culinary institution and sampling the world-famous pastéis de nata, the delicious Portuguese version of the custard tart. The recipe is a well-guarded secret and only at the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém patisserie to you get served the real McCoy! They've been baking here since 1837. The palm-sized cakes are layers of oven-fired pastry moulded together to resemble a bird's nest and filled with a light creamy filling. Crowned with a dusting of cinnamon and/or icing sugar the pastel is not overly sweet but devilishly more-ish – one just isn't enough! Trouble is, everybody else thinks so too and at times this venerated bakery with its intricate azulejos blue-tile decoration appears under siege. Don't worry. If you can't find a table purchase a box to go and munch them in the park opposite. © NileGuide2011
Pastéis De Belém is a traditional pastry shop, one of the best in Lisbon. Since 1837.Pastéis De Belém makes its own 'pastéis de Belém' according to an old recipe from the Monastery of Jerónimos. The 'pasteis de Belém' are small, delicious puff pastry cakes with a soft crème brulée filling. You can savor them, if you want, inside the shop, in a nice room decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles (azulejos). Check the website for seasonal timings. - © wcities.com 2012
