Description:

• Prize-winning wine writer João Paulo Martins is the inspiration behind this wonderfully beguiling wine bar. Imaginatively set within the old stone-blocked walls of an 18th-century chafariz, or cistern, in the vaults of Lisbon's aqueduct. Fine wine here is served by the glass or bottle and represents some of the country's most celebrated labels, including Madeira and Ports. Listed too is an eclectic range of foreign wines. Chafariz do Vinho is also a restaurant and offers a deceptively simple menu dégustation (tasting menu) that allows several different wines to be sampled in one sitting. Duck confit with sweet potato exemplifies the dishes on offer. The kitchen is open until 1pm. It is situated on the site of the old Lisbon well, from where the city's water supply used to come; it is an ideal place to keep wine. The quality of the bottles is irreproachable and it has a very good collection of wines, not only from all regions in Portugal, but also several corners of the globe.
