NileGuide Expert Says:
One of the city's most historic and photogenic cultural venues.
Description:
- The opera season at this beautiful Neo-Classical venue is always eagerly anticipated, but concert, ballet and theatre performances also take place throughout the year. Built in the 1790s following a design by José da Costa e Silva, the building is located in Chiado and is one of Lisbon's great cultural landmarks. The theatre's façade is clearly influenced by La Scala in Milan while the lavish Rococo interior is reminiscent of the San Carlo in Naples. São Carlos is home to the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra and the São Carlos Choir. National productions are complemented by international acts of the highest calibre and previous seasons have seen major works by the likes of Wagner, Mozart, Rossini and Strauss performed to standing ovations. During the city's annual Oceans Festival free street theatre takes place in the square directly in front of the building where a restaurant and café is also situated. Check the theatre's website for schedules and ticketing information. © NileGuide2011 The S.Carlos National Theatre is a part of any Lisbon guide-book. It has a tradition of more than one hundred years, built upon the wonderful presentations that were and are seen there. Located in the Chiado area, it has a marvelous architectural style and the beauty inside is even more astonishing. The Opera time at S.Carlos is always filled with classical and sumptuous presentations.
